Cave Springs unveils Highway 112 expansion plans addressing community safety concerns

The Arkansas Highway Commission has taken a significant step forward in addressing community concerns regarding the upcoming Highway 112 project in Cave Springs. During a recent meeting, officials presented a detailed visualization of the proposed changes, aimed at alleviating fears about potential safety issues related to the road's widening.

The project, designated as ARDOT job 090-636, will widen Highway 112 from Pleasant Grove Road to Highway 12. This expansion is particularly crucial due to the high number of homes in the area and the sharp curves at Southwest Gator Boulevard and Elk Road. To minimize disruption, ARDOT plans to construct the new highway alignment behind the Saint Valerie Downs neighborhood, ensuring that the existing tree line remains intact as a natural buffer.

The visualization showcased a two-lane road in each direction, separated by a median, with intermittent U-turn options. Notably, the design includes a 5-foot sidewalk on the southbound side and a 10-foot shared-use path on the northbound side, promoting pedestrian safety and accessibility. The new asphalt pavement is expected to reduce noise compared to traditional concrete, and a noise study indicated no need for additional sound mitigation measures.
