St. Lucie County School District is making strides in community engagement and student attendance, as highlighted in the recent School Board Meeting on January 14, 2025. A key focus of the meeting was the Surfers for Autism program, which provides therapeutic surfing experiences for children on the autism spectrum. The program, running from May through September, brings together 20 to 40 kids each weekend, utilizing the benefits of saltwater therapy to enhance their well-being. Participants not only enjoy the physical benefits of surfing but also gain valuable life skills in an inclusive environment. Community members are encouraged to volunteer and support this initiative, which fosters a sense of belonging and personal achievement among the children.
In addition to the surfing program, the district is actively addressing student attendance through its "Aim for 100" initiative. Esther Rivera, director of student services, reported on the district's efforts to boost attendance rates across schools. The initiative recognizes schools that excel in promoting positive attendance practices, with four schools being acknowledged for their significant improvements in daily attendance for November 2024. This recognition aims to motivate schools to continue their efforts in ensuring students are present and engaged in their education.
