In the heart of New Orleans, a significant moment unfolded at the City Council meeting on November 7, 2024, as the council members gathered to discuss the Reclaiming Legacy Project. This initiative aims to honor Captain Andre Caillou, a Black Civil War hero, through a reenactment of his historic funeral procession scheduled for May 24, 2025.

Tani MC Majin, the project organizer, introduced Sanaa Emsa McGee, who passionately shared the story of Caillou, a man born into slavery who became a prominent figure in New Orleans. Caillou was not only a successful cigar maker but also a community leader who galvanized support for the Union cause during the Civil War.
