Coconino County secures $600K grant for mental health and substance abuse support in schools

The Coconino County Board of Supervisors held a special session on December 10, 2024, focusing on significant funding initiatives and organizational appointments. The meeting highlighted the approval of a substantial grant aimed at supporting vulnerable youth in the county.

During the session, Supervisor Patrice Horstman announced that the county had successfully secured a three-year grant from the Governor's Office of Youth, Faith, and Family, totaling nearly $600,000. The first year of funding amounts to $199,778, which will be allocated to mental health support and substance abuse prevention programs for students and families at alternative high schools in Coconino County. This initiative builds on previous funding from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds.

The board expressed strong support for the grant, with Supervisor Horstman commending the efforts of County School Superintendent Cheryl Mango Paget and her team for their advocacy on behalf of the county's youth. The board unanimously approved the grant and the corresponding budget adjustment.

In addition to the grant discussion, the board also addressed procedural matters, including the approval of consent items and the appointment of representatives to the County Supervisors Association Legislative Policy Committee. Supervisor Horstman was designated as the primary representative, with Supervisor Lina Fowler serving as the alternate.
