Pensacola hockey leaders push for new ice sports complex to boost local economy

During a recent Escambia County government meeting, community leaders and residents passionately advocated for the development of a full-time ice sports complex in Pensacola. The discussions highlighted the growing popularity of ice hockey and figure skating in the region, emphasizing the need for expanded facilities to accommodate the increasing number of participants.

The chairman of the Emerald Coast Ice Hockey Association noted that their adult recreational league is currently limited to 120 players due to insufficient ice time. He expressed confidence that demand could easily double if a dedicated ice sports complex were established. This facility would not only serve local residents but also attract players from surrounding areas, including Biloxi and Panama City, thereby boosting local tourism and the economy.

Jennifer Burkhart, secretary of the North Florida Youth Hockey League, echoed these sentiments, sharing that her league has 230 registered children who struggle to find adequate ice time. She pointed out that their limited access forces families to travel to other states for competitions, taking valuable revenue out of the local economy. Burkhart urged the commissioners to consider the voices of the youth who are eager to participate in ice sports.

Carlos Villa, a newcomer to the area, highlighted the lack of ice rinks in the Panhandle, noting that the nearest facility is over 240 miles away. He emphasized the potential for a local rink to draw in families from across the region, particularly as hockey continues to grow in popularity in Florida, thanks in part to the success of professional teams in the state.

Wesley Carter, a native of Pensacola and a coach in the local youth hockey community, reinforced the idea that Pensacola is a rooted hockey community. He stressed the importance of creating a facility that could host not only hockey but also figure skating and public skating sessions, further enhancing the area's recreational offerings.

The meeting underscored a collective desire among community members for an ice sports complex, which they believe would serve as a catalyst for economic growth and community engagement. As discussions continue, the potential for such a facility remains a focal point for local leaders and residents alike, with hopes that their advocacy will lead to tangible developments in the near future.
