Bluffton launches youth lacrosse program and free clinic to boost local interest

Beaufort County is set to enhance its youth sports offerings with the introduction of a new lacrosse program and an exciting MLB Pitch Hit and Run event. During the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meeting on January 9, 2025, officials announced that registration for the lacrosse program is now open, aiming to attract more participants and expand the sport's reach in the community.

The lacrosse initiative is particularly focused on increasing interest among local youth, with hopes of growing from five teams last year to seven or eight this season. A free clinic, organized by a local lacrosse coach, is scheduled for January 26, 2025, to introduce the sport to newcomers. The clinic will provide all necessary equipment at no cost, making it accessible for all interested participants. Currently, ten individuals have signed up, with registration open until January 24.

In addition to lacrosse, the board discussed the upcoming MLB Pitch Hit and Run event, a free program for children aged 7 to 14. This event will allow participants to showcase their baseball skills in throwing, hitting, and running, with winners advancing to a regional tournament in August. The program is designed to be inclusive, welcoming participants from beyond Bluffton, including those from Savannah and surrounding areas.

The board emphasized the importance of collaboration with local schools to promote these initiatives, particularly in areas north of Broad River, where lacrosse opportunities are limited. Discussions included the potential for additional clinics to engage high school students and ensure that all interested athletes have access to the sport.
