Everett School District launches student-led initiative to boost attendance and community engagement

The Everett School Committee convened on December 16, 2024, to discuss various initiatives and updates within the Everett Public Schools. The meeting highlighted the ongoing implementation of a new educational model inspired by the Ron Clark Academy, which aims to foster community and student engagement across four selected houses within the school.

The superintendent reported that students are actively involved in choosing their focus areas, such as attendance and community building, with regular meetings facilitated by faculty members. This initiative, which emerged from professional development and discussions within the equity team, is currently being piloted in one of the district's larger K-8 schools, targeting grades 2 through 8. The school plans to gather feedback through a climate survey and will assess the program's impact on student engagement and attendance by the end of the school year.

In addition to the new program, the superintendent shared updates on the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) accreditation process for Everett High School. The school received commendations for its focus on key graduate traits, including resilience, innovation, self-awareness, empowerment, and service-mindedness. Monthly recognition ceremonies celebrate students who exemplify these traits, reinforcing a positive school culture.

The meeting also addressed logistical matters, including the upcoming half-day schedule on December 20, which will now dismiss students at 11 AM. The superintendent assured that communication regarding this change would be disseminated through various channels to ensure families are informed.

Lastly, a reminder was issued regarding the cafeteria menu, encouraging students and families to engage with the school’s food services by providing feedback and suggestions, which can be submitted through the school’s website.

The meeting concluded with a motion to accept the superintendent's update, which was unanimously approved by the committee members. Overall, the discussions underscored the district's commitment to innovative educational practices and community involvement.
