Winneshiek County officials are racing against the clock to protect local wildlife while advancing critical infrastructure projects. During the November 25 meeting, supervisors highlighted the urgent need to remove trees by April 1 to safeguard threatened bat species before they return for the season. This timeline sets a tight window for tree removal, with all construction work required to be completed by December of next year.
In addition to the tree removal, the county is preparing to submit a grant application aimed at enhancing fish habitats in Walden Pond. The pond, which has been experiencing leaks and rusted outlets, will undergo dredging to remove sediments. This proactive measure is expected to extend the pond's lifespan significantly, potentially adding another 70 years of usability.
The meeting also touched on ongoing projects, including the recent opening of Bridge 5, which is now operational following the completion of essential control measures. As the county moves forward with these initiatives, officials remain focused on balancing environmental protection with infrastructure development.
