California launches wellness coach program to tackle youth mental health crisis

Youth mental health challenges are at an all-time high, and California is stepping up to address this urgent issue with the launch of a new Wellness Coach Scholarship Program. The initiative, introduced by the Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI), aims to create a robust workforce of certified wellness coaches dedicated to supporting the mental and emotional well-being of children and youth.

During a recent webinar, officials highlighted the pressing need for behavioral health services, noting that one in four adolescents suffers from depression and anxiety. The Children and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative (CYBHI) is funding this program, which seeks to transform the behavioral health landscape by increasing access to preventive care and early intervention services.

The wellness coach model is designed to fill significant gaps in California's behavioral health workforce, which currently struggles to meet the growing demand for services. By training a diverse group of wellness coaches, the program aims to ensure that support is available where it is needed most—within the communities themselves.

Participants in the webinar learned that certified wellness coaches will provide preclinical behavioral health support, focusing on teaching healthy habits, addressing social and emotional needs, and connecting youth with appropriate resources. This proactive approach is intended to help young people before they require more intensive clinical services.

As the state grapples with a mental health crisis among its youth, the introduction of the Wellness Coach Scholarship Program represents a critical step toward building a more equitable and effective behavioral health system in California.
