Daytona Beach plans to become Florida's first city to implement advanced surveillance technology

During a recent government meeting, Daytona Beach officials discussed the potential implementation of advanced surveillance technology aimed at enhancing public safety in key areas of the city. The proposal, which includes the installation of 24 camera packages, is designed to provide real-time monitoring and rapid response capabilities, particularly in high-traffic locations known for nightlife and community events.

The Seabreeze Park district was highlighted as a primary focus for this technology, especially given its popularity on weekends. Officials noted that recent incidents, including a shooting near a local establishment, underscored the need for improved surveillance. The new system would allow law enforcement to respond more quickly to incidents, potentially arriving on the scene before shots are fired.

In addition to Seabreeze, other locations identified for camera installation include Main Street, Joe Harris Park, and various city facilities such as City Hall and local parks. The initiative aims to bolster safety measures in areas that have experienced security challenges, including a recent incident involving a juvenile attempting to bring a firearm into a stadium.

If approved, Daytona Beach would become the first city in Florida to implement this specific surveillance technology, which is already in use across 42 states, primarily in school districts.
