Historic porch renovation plan aims to restore original design while enhancing lake views

The Ithaca Landmarks Preservation Commission meeting on January 21 spotlighted a significant renovation proposal for a historic porch that has faced deterioration over the years. The discussion centered on plans to reconstruct the porch, which has been compromised by weather exposure and insensitive modifications made after it was converted into a fraternity house.

The existing structure features a beautiful stone base but has suffered from poor renovations, including the installation of double-hung windows and inappropriate siding that detracts from its original charm. Experts highlighted the extent of the damage, noting issues like rotting beams and moisture infiltration, which have led to the recommendation for a complete rebuild from the stone upward.

The proposed design aims to honor the historic elements while introducing modern features. The plan includes using Marvin Modern series glass to create a minimalistic enclosure that preserves the open-air feel of the porch.
