Baltimore County Police prioritize domestic violence response after Rosedale shooting tragedy

The BCO Committee Session held on January 17, 2025, focused on pressing issues surrounding domestic violence and crime statistics in Baltimore County. The meeting highlighted the aftermath of a tragic domestic shooting incident that occurred on Christmas Eve in Rosedale, where a man shot his girlfriend and two children. The police department has since arrested and charged the suspect, while also providing support to the victims and the traumatized community.

During the session, officials discussed ongoing efforts to address domestic violence, led by a dedicated work group within the Baltimore County Police Department. This group, headed by Henry Caligari, aims to develop strategies to better serve the community and respond to domestic violence incidents, which have historically contributed to a significant portion of homicides in the area. The police department emphasized the importance of monitoring households with repeat calls for service to prevent future tragedies.

In terms of crime statistics for 2024, the overall crime rate in Baltimore County showed a decline. Homicides decreased slightly from 29 in 2023 to 28 in 2024. However, nonfatal shootings increased from 65 to 75, largely influenced by the aforementioned incidents in December. Despite these spikes, officials noted that without these events, the year-end numbers would have been lower than in 2023.

Robberies and carjackings also saw a decrease, while assaults rose. Burglary and vehicle thefts, on the other hand, continued to decline. The police department remains committed to addressing these issues and prioritizing community safety as they move forward.
