Alpha House expands shelter capacity to support 14 families amid winter crisis in Ann Arbor

In the heart of Washtenaw County, the Alpha House has embarked on a transformative journey, expanding its capacity to provide shelter for families in need. For over 30 years, this vital organization has offered refuge to six families at a time. However, recent developments have allowed them to significantly increase their services, accommodating up to 14 families simultaneously.

During a recent meeting of the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners, representatives from Alpha House shared their progress and challenges as they launched their Weather Amnesty program. This initiative, made possible by winter shelter funding, has enabled Alpha House to hire additional staff and open its doors to families seeking shelter from the harsh winter conditions. In just two months, they have welcomed 35 families, a stark increase from the previous year when they could only serve a handful.

The expansion included moving to a new building on North Ashley, where renovations transformed office space into additional bedrooms. This change has been crucial, especially during the recent cold snap, when Alpha House hosted 73 individuals in one night, a significant rise from the 20 to 23 they typically accommodated last winter. The shelter not only provides a roof over their heads but also three meals a day, clothing, and essential supplies.

A key aspect of their mission is case management, which goes beyond providing temporary shelter. Families receive personalized support to navigate their housing situations, health issues, and other challenges. The shelter director plays a pivotal role in this process, conducting daily assessments and connecting families with necessary resources, including mental health services.

However, the meeting also highlighted a pressing concern: the future of the Weather Amnesty program. As the end of March approaches, families currently relying on this service are anxious about what will happen next. The staff at Alpha House expressed their commitment to addressing these concerns and emphasized the need for ongoing discussions about sustainable solutions for families facing homelessness.
