Madison schools launch Mad for Reading initiative to boost literacy and community engagement

The Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) is making strides in promoting literacy and community health, as highlighted in the recent Board of Education meeting held on January 27, 2025. The district celebrated the launch of its "Mad for Reading" initiative, aimed at enhancing literacy across all schools. This campaign, which emphasizes equity, excellence, and the science of reading, encourages schools to host their own literacy-themed events over the coming months, fostering engagement among students, families, and the broader community.

In addition to literacy efforts, the district's human resources team reported positive developments in staffing. Teacher turnover rates and substitute fill rates have improved, contributing to a more stable learning environment. The district continues to seek qualified candidates to join its mission-driven workforce, building on the momentum gained since the school year began in September.

Health initiatives were also a focal point of the meeting. MMSD announced an upcoming vaccine clinic scheduled for February 8 at the Holtzman Learning Center, following a successful series of clinics in the fall that saw record participation. The district encourages community members to take advantage of this opportunity, especially with the rise of communicable diseases like pertussis and RSV.

The meeting also addressed the district's strategic framework, thanking participants of the first steering committee meeting. This collaborative effort aims to guide the district's future direction, with community input deemed essential for success.

Additionally, the board acknowledged generous donations from local organizations, including $41,148 from Friends of MSCR and $12,500 from the La Follette High School Booster Club, which will support various student and staff initiatives.

As MMSD moves forward with these initiatives, the focus remains on enhancing educational outcomes and community health, ensuring that all students have the resources and support they need to thrive.
