Los Alamos Little Theatre faces funding crisis ahead of 75th anniversary celebration

The Los Alamos County Council meeting on January 28, 2025, highlighted urgent concerns regarding the future of the Performing Arts Center, as community members voiced their fears about the impact of upcoming renovations. Terri Turton, vice president of the Los Alamos Little Theatre, emphasized the significance of March 2026, which marks the theater's 75th anniversary. She expressed worries that the planned asbestos abatement and sprinkler installation, set to begin in June, could leave the venue in a state unfit for celebrations or performances.

Turton detailed that the renovation plans involve extensive demolition, with up to 90% of walls and 80% of ceilings needing removal. However, she pointed out a critical gap in funding for necessary upgrades to electrical, mechanical, and plumbing systems, which are required by state law. Without these improvements, the theater risks becoming a "shell" that cannot safely host performances or accommodate its diverse audience.

Colin McDowell, a board member of the Little Theatre, echoed Turton's sentiments, highlighting the theater's role in supporting local businesses. He shared that theatergoers often dine and socialize in local establishments before and after shows, contributing significantly to the local economy. McDowell estimated that theater productions could generate around $168,000 annually for local businesses, underscoring the theater's importance beyond the arts.

Both speakers urged the council to prioritize the Performing Arts Center's renovation and requested a formal presentation to outline the project's scope, timeline, and budget. They emphasized the need for transparency and community engagement to ensure the theater remains a vibrant part of Los Alamos County's cultural landscape.
