Detroit City Council approves Afro Future Festival and free estate planning workshops

Detroit City Council has taken significant steps to enhance community services and events during their recent meeting on January 16, 2025. A key decision was made to revisit the proposal for year-round trash bins at city-owned parks, with a request for an update from the General Services Department to be brought back in one week. In addition, the council approved a petition from Pax of Howe Inc. to host the 2025 Afro Future Festival at Brewster Douglas Event Field from August 15 to August 22. Another notable decision was the approval of a $50,000 grant for restoration improvements at Hartstein Park, with Michigan Recreational Construction Inc. as the contractor. This funding will support ongoing efforts to enhance local parks, ensuring they remain safe and enjoyable for residents.

During member reports, Vice Chairwoman Callaway and other council members highlighted upcoming community events, including Martin Luther King Day celebrations at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. They also promoted free estate planning and will preparation workshops aimed at helping residents secure their familial wealth, particularly in light of the challenges faced by families without proper estate plans.
