Multnomah County is set to see significant improvements in emergency medical services following a recent update from American Medical Response (AMR) during the county's regular meeting on October 31, 2024. AMR's regional director highlighted the organization's commitment to enhancing response times and reducing emergency service gaps as part of a settlement agreement with the county.
Since August, AMR has made substantial strides in overhauling its ambulance deployment strategy. The organization has onboarded 65 new EMTs, with an additional 13 expected in November, marking the largest staffing expansion in its history. This initiative aims to ensure that emergency medical personnel can respond more effectively to the needs of Multnomah County residents.
The director acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the Multnomah County EMS team and the Teamsters organization, emphasizing their support in prioritizing workforce needs during this transition. The settlement agreement has also led to the hiring of 14 paramedics outside of traditional recruitment channels, reflecting a renewed interest in EMS careers in the region.
In addition to hiring, AMR has expanded its training programs, doubling the size of its training division to accommodate the influx of new staff. This includes the introduction of a scholarship program that allows aspiring paramedics to gain experience while receiving financial support.
AMR is also addressing equipment needs by investing in 14 new ambulances to ensure adequate resources are available for the expanded workforce. The organization has shifted its focus away from standby contracts for events to concentrate fully on 911 response capabilities.
As AMR prepares for the official launch of its redesigned system, the community can expect improved emergency medical services that prioritize timely responses and support for the dedicated personnel serving Multnomah County.
