University High's Tyler Garbick honored for representing West Virginia at Boys Nation in DC

The Monongalia County Board of Education held its regular meeting on January 28, 2025, where community engagement and student achievements took center stage. The meeting began on a positive note, with the board chair expressing gratitude for the attendees and highlighting the unique calendar of the month, which featured five Fridays.

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to recognizing local student Tyler Garbick from University High School. Garbick was honored for his selection and participation in the prestigious American Legion Boys Nation program in Washington, D.C. This program is highly competitive, with less than 1% of participants from Boys State being chosen for Boys Nation. Garbick represented West Virginia as a senator, gaining firsthand experience in the workings of the national government.

Matt Sampson, assistant director at Mountaineer Boys State, presented Garbick with a plaque in recognition of his achievement. He noted that Monongalia County has now produced two Boys Nation senators in the last three years, showcasing the county's commitment to fostering civic engagement among its youth. An honorary plaque was also awarded to University High School, along with a special photograph from one of West Virginia's U.S. Senators, commemorating Garbick's experience.
