Lacey Township schools propose $90M bond referendum for critical roof and HVAC repairs

The Lacey Township School District is gearing up for a crucial bond referendum on March 11, 2025, aimed at addressing significant infrastructure needs across its schools. Acting Superintendent of Schools emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting that the district has faced devastating tax increases and reduced state aid, which have strained both the school budget and local families.

The referendum will consist of three separate questions, allowing residents to vote on each proposal individually. The first question focuses on replacing all school roofs, which are currently out of warranty and in dire need of repair. If approved, this initiative is expected to be tax neutral, meaning it would not increase the debt service portion of local taxes, as it would replace retiring debt.

The second question addresses the replacement of aging HVAC systems throughout the district. Many of these units are over 20 years old and have exceeded their life expectancy. This question will have a tax impact, estimated at about $12 per month for the average homeowner, translating to approximately $144 annually over a 20-year period.

The third question proposes various improvements, including locker room repairs at both the high school and middle school, repaving of elementary school parking lots, and the installation of a turf field behind the high school.

Superintendent highlighted the importance of the first question, stating that if it fails, the entire referendum would be jeopardized. This structured approach aims to give the community a clear choice in how to invest in their schools while addressing pressing maintenance issues.

As the district prepares for the vote, officials are encouraging residents to educate themselves on the proposals to make informed decisions that will impact the future of Lacey Township's educational facilities.
