Central Garage approves $656829 roof replacement to meet energy standards

Oakland County officials have approved a significant investment in infrastructure with a full roof replacement for the Central Garage, a facility crucial to county operations. The project, which covers 31,500 square feet, will cost $656,829 and is set to meet current energy codes, ensuring enhanced efficiency and longevity.

Royal Roofing was selected as the most responsive bidder, providing the best value for the project. The new roof will utilize a 90-mil EPDM rubber membrane, which is known for its durability and insulation properties. This upgrade will feature thicker insulation than the existing roof, which has been in place since 1993, further improving energy efficiency.

During the meeting, committee members emphasized the importance of the Central Garage's location and functionality, confirming that the county intends to remain in the current building rather than relocating to Pontiac. This decision reassures stakeholders that the investment is aimed at maintaining essential services within the community.

The new roof will also be black, a choice made after careful consideration of energy efficiency in the local climate. Officials noted that the black color aids in snow melting during winter months, reducing the load on the roof and enhancing safety.

The Central Garage is located just north of the county jail, a site that may not be well-known to all residents. This project represents a commitment to maintaining and improving county infrastructure, ensuring that essential services continue to operate effectively for the community.
