The Burlington Community School District's recent meeting highlighted the successful efforts of Grimes Elementary's student leadership team in organizing a canned food drive for the Linda Paul Pantry. The initiative, which took place in November 2024, aimed to support community members in need during the holiday season.
The leadership team challenged classrooms to collect non-perishable food items, fostering a spirit of competition among students. Each classroom was assigned a designated box for donations, and a visual graph was updated daily to track progress. The competition culminated in a close race, with Miss Beckman's first-grade class winning by collecting 354 items, just ahead of Miss Woods' fourth-grade class with 346 items. Overall, Grimes Elementary students contributed a total of 1,545 items, surpassing last year's total by over 540 items.
The food drive concluded before Thanksgiving, ensuring timely delivery to the pantry. Staff at the Linda Paul Pantry expressed their gratitude, noting that the donations significantly impacted the community, serving 1,522 individuals and 493 families. The pantry also acknowledged Grimes Elementary on social media for their contributions.
Looking ahead, the student leadership team plans to continue their community support by organizing a new drive in February for the Des Moines County Humane Society Shelter. This initiative will encourage donations for animals, with the winning class receiving a field trip to the shelter. The team is also preparing promotional materials to raise awareness about the upcoming drive, themed around Valentine's Day to emphasize love for pets.
The meeting underscored the importance of community involvement and the positive impact of student-led initiatives in fostering a culture of kindness and support within the Burlington area.
