The Utah Department of Agriculture and Food (UDAF) held a meeting on January 31, 2025, to provide an update on the ongoing legislative session. Commissioner Craig Butters opened the discussion by highlighting that the session is currently in its second week, with various initiatives underway.
During the meeting, Butters reported to the rural caucus about key topics, including the food processing grant and the Leroy McAllister working farm and ranch fund. He noted that next week, UDAF will present to the Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Environment Appropriations Committee, discussing the department's programs and initiatives.
Butters emphasized the department's request for an additional $1,000,000 for the food processing grant program, which has received the same amount in the past three years. He expressed optimism about continuing the program, which has positively impacted food processing across the state. Additionally, he mentioned other financial requests aimed at supporting various programs, including the specialty products program and the Agriculture Resource and Development Loan Funds (ARDLE).
The commissioner acknowledged the collaborative efforts of UDAF staff, including Amber Brown, the Director of Legislative and Government Affairs, and Deputy Kelly Pearson, who are actively tracking bills and working with legislators to promote agriculture in Utah. He concluded by thanking all individuals involved in supporting agriculture, including producers, businesses, food manufacturers, and retail suppliers.
Overall, the meeting underscored UDAF's commitment to advancing agricultural initiatives and securing necessary funding during the legislative session.
