In the heart of winter, as snow blankets the streets of Bozeman, the city’s commitment to keeping roads clear and safe has become a pressing topic of discussion. During the recent City Commission meeting on January 14, 2025, Commissioner Boney shed light on the extensive efforts of the city’s snow removal operations, revealing the sheer scale of the task at hand.
Since the beginning of the year, city crews have plowed an impressive 10,830 miles, a staggering figure for a city that spans just 23 square miles. This monumental effort has been particularly evident following a recent storm that left 14 inches of snow in its wake. Boney noted that all local streets were addressed within a week of the storm, showcasing the city’s dedication to maintaining accessibility for its residents.

With a full staff of 18 street operators and additional support from mechanics and water department personnel, the city has mobilized all available resources to tackle the snow removal challenge. Boney emphasized that even those not directly involved in street operations have contributed to the effort, reinforcing a community-wide commitment to safety.
However, the intense usage of snow removal vehicles has led to some breakdowns, prompting the vehicle maintenance shop to work overtime to keep the fleet operational. The arrival of new graders, designed to handle residential streets more delicately, was also a point of pride. These machines are equipped with snow gates that help minimize the snow buildup at driveways, a feature that aims to enhance the service provided to residents.
Despite the commendable efforts, Boney acknowledged that not all feedback has been positive. Some residents have expressed dissatisfaction with the snow removal services, a reminder of the challenges that come with managing public expectations during harsh winter conditions. Nevertheless, the city remains steadfast in its mission to ensure that streets are safe and accessible for all.
As the winter season continues, the Bozeman City Commission’s discussions underscore the importance of community collaboration and the relentless work behind the scenes to keep the city moving, even in the face of nature’s challenges.
