Council approves $90K self-pay kiosk project for Salt Creek and Dungeness campgrounds

In a recent work session held on February 3, 2025, Clallam County officials discussed the implementation of self-pay kiosks at two local campgrounds, Salt Creek and Dungeness. This initiative aims to streamline payment processes and enhance the camping experience for visitors, addressing ongoing challenges related to cash handling.

The county plans to utilize a procurement method through the United States Government's General Services Administration, allowing them to bypass the traditional bidding process. This approach is expected to save the county significant funds, with the total estimated cost for the kiosks around $90,000, which includes installation. Officials expressed optimism that the project could return funds to the general fund by the end of the fiscal year.

The kiosks will primarily accept credit card payments, reducing the need for cash transactions that have proven cumbersome in the past. Campground managers noted that handling cash in humid environments can lead to complications, such as stuck bills and the need for additional staff to manage transactions. By transitioning to a cashless system, the county aims to improve efficiency and reduce labor costs associated with cash handling.

In addition to the kiosks, the county plans to enhance communication with campers about the new payment system, which is expected to launch around Memorial Day. For the initial months, both the current cash envelope system and the new kiosks will be available to ensure a smooth transition for visitors.

This move not only modernizes the payment process but also aims to provide better information regarding campsite availability, reducing confusion for campers.
