Lakeway Council proposes TxDOT breakout projects for RM 620 traffic and safety improvements

Lakeway City Council has taken a significant step towards improving traffic safety and operations on RM 620 by proposing interim enhancements at key intersections. During a recent meeting on February 3, 2025, Councilor O'Brien presented a plan to collaborate with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to implement breakout projects aimed at alleviating congestion and enhancing safety along this heavily traveled roadway.

The proposal comes in response to ongoing concerns about traffic congestion and safety issues at four critical intersections: Lakeway Boulevard, Dave Drive, Main Street, and Lohmans Crossing. Councilor O'Brien emphasized the urgency of these improvements, noting that the full TxDOT project for RM 620 is still years away from completion, potentially leaving the community without necessary upgrades for nearly a decade.

The proposed interim improvements include widening the pavement at these intersections to facilitate smoother U-turns, which are currently challenging due to the raised median design. This adjustment aims to reduce traffic disruptions and enhance safety for drivers attempting to navigate these busy intersections. O'Brien highlighted that the city could expect to contribute a maximum of $250,000 towards the estimated total project cost of $3.5 to $4 million, representing a 15% to 20% funding participation.

In addition to improving traffic flow, the proposed enhancements are designed to minimize future disruptions when the larger TxDOT project is eventually executed. By addressing these issues now, the city aims to ensure that the groundwork is laid for a more efficient and safer traffic system in the long term.

The council's discussions also touched on the frequency of accidents related to U-turns at these intersections, with local law enforcement noting that collisions have been reported, particularly at Lohmans Crossing and Main Street. The proposed improvements are expected to address these safety concerns directly.

As the city moves forward with this proposal, the collaboration with TxDOT will be crucial in securing the necessary approvals and funding.
