Colleyville City Council considers Purple Heart City designation and rec center expansion plans

During the Colleyville City Council Work Session on February 4, 2025, city officials discussed two significant initiatives aimed at enhancing community engagement and recreational facilities.

The first topic was the proposed designation of Colleyville as a Purple Heart City, a recognition that honors the sacrifices of military veterans who have been awarded the Purple Heart. Assistant City Manager Adrienne Lothrey introduced the initiative, which was brought forth by local resident and Heroes Park committee member Eric Newton. The designation process requires a nomination from a Purple Heart recipient, which Newton has offered to fulfill. If approved, the city would hold a proclamation ceremony to celebrate the designation, inviting local veterans and the community to participate. This initiative not only aims to express gratitude towards veterans but also to place Colleyville on the national Purple Heart Trail, connecting it with other cities that share this honor.

The second major discussion centered on the expansion of the Colleyville Recreation Center. Assistant City Manager Mark Blitter outlined plans to place a proposition on the May 2025 ballot, seeking voter approval for a $20 million bond to fund the expansion. This follows a successful advisory vote in May 2024, where 74% of residents supported the idea of expanding the facility. The proposed expansion includes a new 31,000 square foot addition featuring a fitness center, a third gymnasium, locker rooms, and an elevated indoor track. The expansion aims to enhance recreational opportunities for residents and accommodate growing community needs.

Both initiatives reflect Colleyville's commitment to honoring its veterans and improving community facilities. The council plans to further discuss these topics in upcoming meetings, with the expectation of moving forward with the necessary steps for both the Purple Heart City designation and the recreation center expansion.
