The Parks and Recreation Commission of West Bend convened on January 30, 2025, to discuss the ongoing situation regarding the city's skate park. The meeting featured a detailed presentation by Ryan, who provided a comprehensive history of the skate park's development and the challenges it has faced over the years.
The skate park was initially established in 2003, with equipment purchased by the Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department and the West Bend Rotary for $80,000. Originally located in the YMCA parking lot, the skate park was moved multiple times due to various issues, including a request from the YMCA in 2007 to relocate. After several years of temporary sites and community concerns, the skate park equipment was stored in 2010 due to the lack of a suitable location.

In 2024, the Friends of West Bend Skate Park, a nonprofit organization, was established to address these concerns. They generated a list of 23 potential sites for a new skate park and narrowed it down to six finalists, including locations at Regner Park and Badger Middle School. Discussions with a local business regarding a private parcel of land are ongoing, but no agreements have been finalized.
Ryan emphasized the importance of visibility, safety, and accessibility in selecting a new site for the skate park. The current facility, which is approximately 8,300 square feet, is deemed inadequate for the community's needs, with a recommended size of around 13,000 square feet to accommodate the population.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to continue exploring viable options for a new skate park location, with further discussions planned to assess the potential for partnerships and site development. The commission aims to ensure that the skate park meets the needs of the community while addressing safety and maintenance concerns.
