Sandy Springs police report drops in violent crime amid increased officer patrols

Sandy Springs is set to enhance public safety and community engagement following a productive first day of the 2025 City Council Retreat held on February 5. Key discussions centered around crime statistics, police staffing, and upcoming infrastructure projects that aim to improve the quality of life for residents.

The police department reported over 100,000 calls for service in 2024, with a notable increase in officer-initiated incidents attributed to a fully staffed force of 154 sworn officers. The department aims to reduce serious crashes and general theft by 2% in the coming year, leveraging enhanced patrols and community engagement initiatives. The construction of a new police headquarters and a firearms training facility is also on the agenda, which officials believe will bolster recruitment and retention efforts.

In addition to public safety, the fire department highlighted its success in reducing unnecessary calls for service through new programs and partnerships. The department has seen a decrease in drug overdose responses, attributed to community education and the availability of overdose intervention medication. Plans for a comprehensive community risk assessment and improvements to fire safety protocols were also discussed.

Infrastructure improvements are a priority for the city, with over $93 million allocated for transportation projects in 2025. This includes resurfacing 20 miles of roadways and repairing 1,625 sidewalk trip hazards. The city is also updating its transportation master plan to address changing mobility needs and enhance pedestrian safety at key intersections.

The retreat also focused on community enrichment, with plans to expand recreational programming and complete several park projects, including the new Abernathy Arts Center and Morgan Falls Dog Park. The city aims to foster inclusivity through new programs for individuals with disabilities and enhance cultural offerings at the Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center.
