Davenport approves taller baseball field lights to enhance safety and reduce congestion

Davenport Parks Department has received approval from the Davenport City Zoning Board of Adjustment for a special use permit to install two 70-foot baseball field luminary poles at 1819 Ridgeview Drive. This decision, made during the board's meeting on December 12, 2024, aims to enhance lighting for the North Little League fields while addressing community concerns about congestion and parking.

The request was necessitated by the city’s zoning code, which permits lighting poles up to 65 feet without special approval. The additional height of the proposed poles will allow for better control of light direction, minimizing spillover into neighboring properties. Parks and Recreation Director Chad Dyson explained that the new lighting system, provided by Musco, utilizes advanced technology designed to focus light directly onto the field, thereby reducing light pollution.

The project has been funded through community fundraising efforts by the North Little League, which has operated the Ridgeview Fields for several years. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to alleviate traffic congestion around the park by allowing for staggered scheduling of games, thus improving the overall experience for players and spectators alike.

During the meeting, the board addressed concerns raised by local residents regarding the necessity of the lighting and its potential impact.
