Davenport City officials are moving forward with an ambitious expansion plan for the Farmers Market, aiming to enhance local business opportunities and boost community engagement. During the Davenport City Riverfront Improvement Commission meeting on December 3, 2024, the proposal was presented, highlighting a shift to a Wednesday through Sunday operation from 9 AM to 7 PM, with flexibility based on community demand.

The expansion will introduce 10 to 15 new vendor booths, allowing for a more diverse range of offerings. Missy Carter, the Farmers Market's executive director, reported a significant increase in vendor applications, more than doubling from the previous year, indicating strong community interest. The market has already attracted 200,000 unique visitors from May to September 2024, showcasing its potential as a key economic driver for the area.

A notable feature of the plan includes the development of a community kitchen, which will serve multiple purposes, such as hosting culinary events and providing a space for local bakers currently renting elsewhere. This initiative aims to strengthen partnerships with local businesses, including Front Street Brewery, which has expressed interest in extending its hours to align with the Farmers Market's operations.

The commission discussed the financial aspects of the lease for the new space, currently housing Miracle at the Freight House. A proposed lease of $20,000 per year for the additional space was considered, alongside discussions about potential escalations in rent to ensure the city benefits from the growing market.

Commission members emphasized the importance of balancing community amenities with financial sustainability, noting that while the Farmers Market is a valuable asset, it should also contribute to the city's revenue.
