Residents urge Loma Linda council to address rat infestation and trash theft issues

During the City of Loma Linda City Council meeting on December 10, 2024, residents raised pressing concerns about local issues, particularly regarding neighborhood safety and the growing problem of homelessness.

One resident, Marcy Barakian, highlighted the overgrown shrubbery along Bryn Mawr, which has become a breeding ground for rats. She urged the city to trim the shrubs to prevent them from encroaching into backyards, especially for elderly residents who struggle to maintain their properties. Marcy also pointed out the need for palm tree owners to regularly trim their trees to avoid creating nests for rats. In addition to pest control, Marcy addressed a troubling situation involving an elderly woman who has been seen rummaging through blue trash cans in the neighborhood. While acknowledging the possibility of food insecurity, Marcy expressed concern about potential identity theft, especially for vulnerable residents. She suggested that the city consider adjusting trash collection schedules to mitigate this issue and proposed that local authorities assess the woman's situation for possible assistance.

Another resident, Brianna, brought attention to a homeless encampment near the bike path, which has raised safety concerns among neighbors. She recounted a recent fire incident that occurred in one of the camps, emphasizing the urgent need for a comprehensive response to homelessness in Loma Linda. Brianna proposed a three-pronged approach: hiring a dedicated housing navigator, establishing interim housing solutions like pallet homes, and creating permanent supportive housing options. She urged the council to take responsibility for addressing homelessness within the city, despite challenges related to funding and jurisdiction.

City officials responded by clarifying that some encampments mentioned by Brianna are located in neighboring Redlands, but they acknowledged ongoing efforts to assist individuals experiencing homelessness. They noted that while the city has resources available, many individuals decline help when offered.
