Jesuit High School cross country team wins tenth state championship and national recognition

In a spirited session of the California State Senate on February 6, 2025, the spotlight shone brightly on the Jesuit High School cross country team, celebrated for their remarkable achievement of winning the state championship. This victory marks the team's tenth state title, a testament to their dedication and hard work, culminating in a national ranking of 11th in the country.

Coach Walt Lang, who has led the team since 1971, was honored not only for his coaching prowess but also for receiving the prestigious Joe Newton Award for lifetime achievement in cross country coaching. His legacy is underscored by numerous accolades, including the California Coach of the Year in 1981 and the National Cross Country Boys Coach of the Year in 2010.

Among the team members present were standout athletes like Isaac Abbott, Lucas Alberts, and Chase Chessman, who each completed a 5-kilometer race at an impressive pace of under five minutes per mile. Their commitment to training—logging 60 miles a week, regardless of weather conditions—was highlighted by Senator Grove, who shared a personal connection to one of the athletes, Lucas Alberts, whom he affectionately referred to as "Lukey."
