Kaut gave approximate program scale and performance figures: the county has roughly 3,239 individual mechanical systems (IMS) — small onsite treatment/discharge systems — and “about 95%” of bacterial tests on those samples return within acceptable limits. She explained sampling protocol for microbiology: samplers collect 100 milliliters of sample but the lab tests 1 milliliter and multiplies colony counts by 100, which is why results are sometimes reported as “less than 100” when no colonies are observed.

Kaut also reviewed accreditation. The microbiology accreditation is overseen by the Illinois Department of Public Health and occurs biannually; Kaut said that inspection is scheduled in April. Chemistry accreditation runs through a National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (NELAP/NELAC) process and is also conducted on a biannual cycle, with a September visit noted in the briefing.
