Rocky Vista University is one step closer to establishing a presence in Kansas after the Kansas Board of Regents recommended the issuance of a certificate of approval. This decision follows a review of the university's compliance with state regulations, despite ongoing concerns about clinical placement shortages in the region.
During the December 18 meeting, Bridal Poudar presented the university's request, highlighting that the board's authority is limited to statutory requirements. While concerns about clinical availability were raised, they do not factor into the approval process as per current regulations. Poudar noted that both Wichita State University and KU Med confirmed challenges in securing clinical placements, but these issues are separate from the board's mandate.
Regent Mendez, who initially brought up the concerns, expressed disappointment over the limitations of the board's authority. He acknowledged that while the board must adhere to existing statutes, the issue of clinical placements could warrant further legislative discussion in the future.
The board's recommendation to approve Rocky Vista's request underscores the institution's compliance with the minimum standards set forth by state law. As the university moves forward, discussions about addressing clinical placement challenges may evolve into a legislative initiative, potentially reshaping the landscape for medical education in Kansas.
