Sullivan County is set to enhance its support for seniors and improve community resources following a recent Planning and Community Resources Committee meeting held on February 7, 2025. Key initiatives discussed include the nomination process for the 2025 Older New Yorker program, which recognizes individuals over 60 who have made significant contributions to their communities. Nominations are due by February 28, with the awards ceremony scheduled for May 27 in Albany.
The Office for the Aging reported a successful completion of its four-year plan and highlighted the restructuring of the RSVP program, which aims to expand its volunteer base. In December alone, volunteers contributed over 1,075 hours, translating to approximately $40,000 in service value. Additionally, the Caregiver Resource Center has launched a wellness initiative for seniors, focusing on health education through a six-week program running until March 3.

Subscribe for free Transportation services are also being bolstered, with the submission of federal funding applications to support rural transportation programs. New bus routes in Liberty and Monticello have already begun operations, with plans for further expansions. In 2024, existing routes provided over 33,000 rides, demonstrating the growing demand for these services.
The meeting also addressed the expanded In-Home Services for Elderly Program, which provides essential non-medical services to homebound seniors. In 2024, 42 individuals benefited from this program, which significantly reduces the potential costs of nursing home care.
In addition to these initiatives, the committee discussed ongoing efforts in mental health support for public safety personnel and the successful acquisition of grants for various community projects. The meeting underscored the collaborative efforts of county staff in securing funding and improving services for residents.
