Benicia High School debate team excels at national tournament with second place finish

Benicia High School's debate team has made headlines after a remarkable performance at the prestigious Berkeley High Invitational, where students Cozette Calderon and Daniel Delgado secured second place among 74 competing teams. Their success is attributed to the dedicated guidance of advisor Michelle Gaines and the support of alumni coaches, showcasing a strong community commitment to student achievement.

In addition to the debate team's accomplishments, Benicia High School students also excelled at the NorCal KidWind Championship, where they designed and built an efficient wind turbine. Eleven students from the advanced engineering design class participated, demonstrating the school's emphasis on hands-on learning and innovation.

During the recent BUSD Board Meeting held on February 6, 2025, board members highlighted these achievements, emphasizing the importance of extracurricular activities in fostering student growth. The meeting also featured discussions on the establishment of a new debate team at Benicia Middle School, further expanding opportunities for students to engage in critical thinking and public speaking.

Trustee reports included insights from a recent facilities committee meeting, where updates on various school renovations and upgrades were shared. Improvements such as new roofing, ADA upgrades, and enhanced security measures are underway, thanks to community support for recent propositions.

Community members also voiced their appreciation for the district's commitment to inclusivity, particularly regarding immigrant protections. Speakers expressed gratitude for the resources available on the district's website, which outline rights and protocols for immigrant families.
