During a recent meeting of the Springfield Historical Commission, discussions centered on the renovation plans for the historic Stone Haven building, a U-shaped brick masonry structure located on Chestnut Street. The proposed renovations aim to preserve the building's historical integrity while updating its facilities to meet modern standards.
The renovation project will include essential masonry repointing, the installation of new historically appropriate windows, and the replacement of canopies. A new roof is also planned, ensuring the building remains structurally sound. Inside, many original features will be retained, including the marble terrazzo stairs at the center of the building and cast iron stairs in the wings. The main entrance vestibule, adorned with a coffered ceiling, will maintain its historical charm, alongside original calamine doors and crown molding.

Interestingly, some kitchens and bathrooms will feature exposed concrete floors, reminiscent of the hotel's design when it was first constructed between 1929 and 1932.
A unique aspect of the Stone Haven is its subbasement fallout shelter, a time capsule from 1959 filled with historical artifacts, including government-issued medicine and preserved food supplies. This discovery adds a layer of historical significance to the renovation, highlighting the building's rich past.
The discussions at the Springfield Historical Commission underscore the importance of balancing modernization with the preservation of historical sites.
