Hillsborough County declares February 7 Wear Red Day for women's heart health awareness

Heart health took center stage at the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners meeting on February 7, 2025, as officials proclaimed the day as "Wear Red Day" to raise awareness about women's heart health. This initiative, part of a national movement, aims to educate the community on the critical issue of heart disease, which remains the leading cause of death among women in the United States.

Dr. Doug Ross, chief medical officer of AdventHealth Tampa, highlighted the importance of this observance, emphasizing that heart disease claims the lives of over 310,000 women annually. He noted that nearly 44 percent of women in the U.S. are living with some form of heart disease, yet many do not recognize it as their primary health threat.

The proclamation detailed the unique symptoms of heart disease in women, which can often be overlooked. These include chest discomfort, pain in the neck or jaw, nausea, and extreme fatigue. Dr. Ross urged women to be vigilant and call 911 if they experience these signs, as early recognition can save lives.

The meeting also featured a call to action for community members to wear red on this day, symbolizing solidarity in the fight against heart disease. The initiative aims to empower women with knowledge about heart disease symptoms and encourage them to prioritize their cardiovascular health.
