Denver City Council approves $3.59M public art contract for DIA sculpture

The Denver Business, Arts, Workforce, Climate & Aviation Services Committee convened on January 29, 2025, to discuss significant developments impacting the community, particularly focusing on a new public art project at Denver International Airport (DEN).

The committee reviewed a proposal for a $3.59 million contract with the Lipsky Group for the fabrication and installation of a large-scale public artwork titled "The Stars and the Cottonwood." This project, part of the Great Hall Completion Project, is funded through the city's public art ordinance, which allocates 1% of construction budgets for art initiatives. The sculpture, designed by artist Donald Lipsky, will stand 60 feet tall and 70 feet wide, adorned with 30,000 crystals, and is inspired by the historical significance of cottonwood trees to Colorado's indigenous peoples and early settlers.

Council members expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its potential to become an iconic landmark for travelers and a point of community pride. Councilwoman Stacey Gilmore emphasized the importance of representing local history and culture through art, while also advocating for increased opportunities for American Indian artists in future projects.

In addition to the art contract, the meeting included updates on DEN's record passenger numbers, with 82.3 million travelers in 2024, and the introduction of new air service routes, including a partnership with Contour Airlines to Moab, Utah. The airport is also preparing for the arrival of the Airbus A380, the world's largest passenger aircraft, which will enhance international travel options.

The committee's discussions reflect a commitment to enriching Denver's cultural landscape while supporting economic growth and community engagement. As the project progresses, the airport plans to address logistical concerns, such as parking for visitors eager to experience the new artwork, ensuring that the installation complements the overall passenger experience.
