Planning and Zoning reports progress despite weather delays in Euclid projects

The Shade Tree Commission of Euclid, Ohio, convened on December 16, 2024, to discuss key updates on urban forestry projects and community engagement strategies. With Jody absent, the meeting kicked off with a motion to approve the minutes from October, which passed unanimously.

Linda provided a comprehensive update from the Planning and Zoning department, noting that project activity is slowing due to winter weather. However, work at Hero Park, Upland Sims, Russell Avenue Park, and Lakeshore Boulevard is expected to continue, with plantings scheduled for spring. The Davie Resource Group's projects will also carry on into the new year, while young tree training is set to wrap up this week.

High-risk pruning and tree removals at 22 sites are slated to begin after the new year, extending into early February. The commission is actively engaged in urban forestry comprehensive planning, with steering committee meetings planned for late December and early January. Public meetings are still in the works, aiming to enhance community involvement.

A potential partnership with the Student Conservation Association is under consideration, and the search for an urban forester is ongoing, with promising candidates emerging. The service department is also addressing storm damage across the city, focusing on both street and park trees.

In a message from Jody, who attended a virtual meeting on the Euclid urban forest comprehensive plan, she emphasized the importance of public outreach scheduled from January through March. Efforts are being made to adapt traditional public meeting formats to engage residents who typically do not attend. Christine McIntosh is exploring venues, including Euclid High School, to facilitate these meetings, potentially involving junior ambassadors to enhance community participation.
