Laguna introduces new digital permitting portal for community development

On February 10, 2025, Laguna Beach's Community Development Department hosted a webinar to introduce its new digital permitting portal, aimed at streamlining the application process for zoning and building permits. The session, led by the assistant director of community development, provided an overview of the portal's features and functionality, emphasizing its role as an additional tool rather than a replacement for existing processes.

The assistant director highlighted the portal's user-friendly design, which allows applicants to navigate easily through the registration and application processes. Participants were informed that the portal would complement traditional methods, such as in-person submissions at the counter, thereby offering flexibility for users. This dual approach is intended to enhance accessibility and efficiency for residents and developers alike.

During the demonstration, attendees were guided through the steps of applying for a zoning plan check and a building permit. The assistant director noted that the portal simplifies the decision-making process by clearly categorizing applications into three main types: accessory dwelling units (ADUs), commercial, and residential projects. This streamlined approach aims to reduce confusion and delays often associated with more complex systems.

The webinar also included a Q&A session, allowing participants to address any concerns or inquiries regarding the new system. The Community Development Department plans to record the session and make it available online for future reference, ensuring that all stakeholders have access to the information shared.
