The License and Variance Board Meeting in Smyrna, Georgia, on August 28, 2024, focused on a significant proposal regarding Creekwood Park, a small neighborhood park. Caitlin Crowe, a planner from the Community Development department, presented a variance request to reduce the front setback from 35 feet to 10 feet. This adjustment is necessary to accommodate a new pavilion and expanded playground area, responding to community needs.
Creekwood Park, currently featuring only a swing set and mulch area, serves as a primary bus stop for local residents. In March, the Parks and Recreation Department engaged with the community to gather input on improvements. Residents expressed a desire for a shaded pavilion and a larger playground to enhance recreational opportunities for children of various ages.

The plan also features an expanded mulch area in the rear with additional accessible play equipment. Given the park's limited size, city staff believe that the requested variance is the minimum necessary to implement these enhancements.
Staff recommended approval of the variance with three stipulations: compliance with the submitted site plan, review of stormwater management by the city engineer, and adherence to ADA requirements for park features, to be verified by the fire marshal's office before issuing a building permit.
This proposal reflects the city's commitment to improving local parks and meeting community needs, ensuring that Creekwood Park can better serve its residents.
