Massachusetts allocates $25M for high dosage tutoring to combat pandemic learning loss

Governor Healey recently hosted a media availability to discuss the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) and the administration's commitment to addressing educational challenges in Massachusetts. A key focus of the meeting was the proposed investment of $25 million in high dosage tutoring aimed at helping students recover from pandemic-related learning loss.

The initiative is designed to reach 10,000 students, particularly those in kindergarten through grade 3, with an emphasis on first graders. The tutoring program will include early learning services, screening assessments, and both in-person and virtual tutoring focused on foundational skills. Research indicates that high-impact tutoring can be significantly more effective than standard models, potentially increasing student learning by an additional 3 to 15 months.

Governor Healey and Lieutenant Governor emphasized the urgency of this investment, which is part of a broader $50 million commitment to improve literacy instruction and support students in need. They highlighted Massachusetts' historical role as a leader in public education, asserting that every student is entitled to a high-quality education, regardless of their circumstances.
