Schmidt Foundation donates $10000 to support Ellis County fire department initiatives

During the recent Ellis County Commission meeting on December 10, 2024, a significant donation from the Schmidt Foundation was discussed, aimed at enhancing local fire department resources and community engagement. This donation comes in the wake of a challenging grass fire incident in April 2004, which required the efforts of 59 firefighters from six different county fire departments to manage a blaze that spread over seven miles.

Gary Shorman from the Schmidt Foundation reached out to the county fire department to offer support following the fire. The foundation's $10,000 donation will help cover various expenses, including training costs for firefighters and necessary repairs for a UTV (Utility Task Vehicle) that the forestry service provided. This UTV will be outfitted with a pump and tank, making it more effective for firefighting in rugged terrain.

Additionally, part of the funding will assist in purchasing an inflatable bounce house, which will be used for public education events aimed at engaging children and families in fire safety awareness. This initiative aligns with the fire department's goal of increasing community outreach and education.

The commission's approval of this donation not only addresses immediate operational needs but also fosters a stronger connection between the fire department and the community it serves.
