Horizons Mental Health Center celebrates recovery success and plans crisis campaign

In a recent meeting of the Reno County Board of County Commissioners, the atmosphere was filled with a sense of accomplishment and community spirit as officials reflected on the success of the annual toy drive, marking it as the most successful in its 24-year history. Plans are already underway to make next year’s 25th anniversary celebration even more impactful, with organizers expressing their excitement about the future.

The meeting also highlighted the ongoing efforts of Horizons Mental Health Center, led by CEO Vicky Mader, who shared significant updates on their services. Mader emphasized the importance of their assertive community treatment team, which supports individuals with severe mental illnesses. Recently, two individuals graduated from the program, showcasing the positive impact of mental health services in helping people reintegrate into the community and lead productive lives.

Mader addressed the challenges faced by the mental health staff, particularly in the jail, where they are working to provide essential psychiatric services. The addition of a third staff member aims to enhance support for inmates, ensuring they receive necessary care while incarcerated. The mental health center reported over 40,000 services provided to more than 3,000 individuals in the first quarter of the fiscal year, underscoring the growing demand for their crisis services.

The meeting also touched on a new campaign aimed at reducing the stigma surrounding mental health crises. Mader expressed the need for community awareness, encouraging individuals to seek help before reaching a critical point. This initiative aims to humanize the concept of crisis, recognizing that each person's experience is unique and valid.
