Commissioners approve three-year renewal of neighborhood revitalization plan

The Shawnee County Commission made significant strides in community development during its December 12 meeting, approving a three-year renewal of the Neighborhood Revitalization Plan (NRP) and adopting a new regional solid waste management plan.

The commission unanimously authorized the interlocal agreement for the NRP, which will extend from January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2027. This program aims to enhance neighborhood conditions and property values, with a notable change highlighted during the discussion: North Topeka West has improved from an at-risk neighborhood to a healthier status, which unfortunately disqualifies it from future NRP benefits. However, four ongoing projects in that area will be grandfathered in, allowing them to retain their incentives.

Commissioner Mayes expressed strong support for the NRP, stating, "I think this is a great program," before the motion passed with a 3-0 vote.

In addition to the NRP, the commission also adopted the Lake Region Solid Waste Authority's Regional Solid Waste Management Plan. This decision followed a public hearing that saw minimal community engagement, raising concerns among officials about public interest in waste management issues. Director Bill Sutton emphasized the importance of the plan, which was necessitated by Shawnee County's recent partnership with the Lake Region Solid Waste Authority.

Both initiatives reflect the commission's commitment to improving community infrastructure and environmental management, setting the stage for continued development and sustainability in Shawnee County.
