The San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors recognized the transformative impact of the Discovery Challenge Academy (DCA) during their regular meeting on February 11, 2025. The DCA, a 22-week residential program in partnership with the National Guard, aims to help at-risk youth aged 16 to 18 who are at risk of dropping out of high school.
Superintendent Brown highlighted the program's success, noting that since its inception eight years ago, 1,576 cadets have completed the program. The average GPA of students entering DCA is 1.39, which significantly improves to 3.45 upon completion. Currently, 101 cadets are enrolled in the program, demonstrating its ongoing relevance and effectiveness.

He entered DCA with a GPA of 1.4 and is now on track to graduate high school with a GPA of 4.0. Lieutenant Colonel Chris Elson from the California National Guard praised the partnership with the county and emphasized the program's unique position as one of only three such initiatives in the state. He noted that DCA boasts an impressive 85% success rate, with graduates either continuing their education, entering the workforce, or joining the military one year after completion.
The board members expressed their support for DCA, with several sharing personal anecdotes about the program's positive impact on local youth. Supervisor Rickman and others encouraged community involvement, urging residents to attend graduations and support the academy's mission.
As the meeting concluded, the board presented a certificate of appreciation to DCA, reinforcing the program's significance in fostering positive change and providing essential support to the youth of San Joaquin County.
