Queen Creek's Planning and Zoning Commission made significant strides in enhancing community visibility and economic development during their meeting on February 12, 2025. The commission approved a comprehensive sign plan for the Horseshoe Park and Equestrian Center (HPEC), allowing for the installation of a new 40-foot tall monument sign. This decision is expected to improve the park's visibility and promote upcoming events, benefiting both the facility and the local community.
The new sign will replace the existing 30-foot monument sign and will feature a double-sided 128 square foot LED animated display. The LED sign will change images every eight seconds and will be illuminated 24/7, with dimming features in the evening to minimize glare. The request for the larger sign included three deviations from the current zoning ordinance, which typically limits monument signs to a height of eight feet and a maximum area of 48 square feet. The commission found the proposed sign's height and area to be compatible with the surrounding structures, particularly given the size of the main arena at HPEC.

Subscribe for Free David Solum, the general manager of HPEC, highlighted the park's growth, noting that revenues have nearly tripled since 2011 and that the facility hosted over 216,000 visitors last year. The new sign is anticipated to generate approximately $75,000 annually in revenue, with 25% of the digital display time dedicated to promoting community events.
In addition to the Horseshoe Park sign, the commission also reviewed a comprehensive sign plan for a new U-Haul facility located at the southeast corner of Ocotillo and Crisman Roads. This plan included a request for an increase in the maximum allowed wall signage from 150 square feet to 278 square feet. The U-Haul facility will feature illuminated signs that will be dimmed during non-operational hours, aligning with the town's standards for signage brightness.
Both approvals reflect Queen Creek's commitment to fostering economic growth and enhancing community engagement through improved visibility of local businesses and event centers. The commission's decisions are expected to have a positive impact on the town's economic landscape and community spirit in the coming years.
