Modesto Council approves $812K for innovative playground for disabled children

The Modesto City Council made significant strides in enhancing community facilities during its meeting on December 10, 2024, with the approval of the Awesome Spot Playground project, aimed at creating an inclusive play area for children with disabilities. This initiative, which has been in the works for several years, is set to receive a construction contract worth $738,868 from Westside Landscaping and Concrete, with a total budget not exceeding $812,755, including contingencies.

Councilwoman Jenny Conoyer, who has been instrumental in the project’s development, expressed her enthusiasm for moving forward, highlighting the collaborative efforts of local nonprofits in raising funds. The council's approval, which passed with a 6-1 vote, marks a significant step toward providing essential recreational facilities for all children in Modesto.

Council Member Rickey commended the Modesto Police Department for its success in reducing catalytic converter thefts, noting a dramatic decrease from 421 incidents in 2021 to just 42 this year.
