Board Chair Jerry Miller introduced recognitions that included teacher and student awards. The board honored Katie Fowler, Bay Springs Middle School’s school coordinator for special education, for her work supporting students and teachers. Central High School’s academic team was recognized for winning the district high school academic competition; academic coach Heather Robertson and team members John Tate Holby and Lawson Jones attended the meeting to accept the recognition. Lisa McKay, a seventh-grade student from Bay Springs Middle School, was named district spelling bee champion; Ithaca Elementary School fifth-grader Camden Stephens was runner-up.

Superintendent Scott Cowart noted district success at the regional technology fair, saying the district had 26 first-place awards and that many winners will advance to the state competition. He credited STEM efforts and elementary instruction for increasing student interest in science, technology, engineering and math. Cowart also highlighted recent athletic championships at several middle schools, student participation in choir and music programs, and community events including a Kiwanis art show, the NAACP’s MLK scholarship awards and the Chamber of Commerce’s leadership visits.

The board recognized Central Elementary and Rootville Elementary for Title I distinctions: Central Elementary was named a 2023–24 Title I Distinguished School and Rootville Elementary was named a Title I Reward School for improvement. Leslie Green, assistant director of instructional support, received the Jimmy Stokes G.A.I.L. Service Award for work on MTSS and dyslexia services.

Superintendent Scott Cowart told the board the calendars were developed with input from students, staff and parents and that the significant change recommended by teachers was moving the school-year start day from Friday to Thursday. “The biggest one that resulted in a change was the changing of the starting of school from a Friday to a Thursday,” Cowart said. “That was strongly recommended by the teachers.”

Board member Turner moved to approve the two calendars; board member Morris seconded the motion. Chair Jerry Miller called for a voice vote; the motion carried with all members voting in favor.
